I heard of Bern’s Steakhouse when I was working as a fine dining server on Sanibel Island near Fort Myers. That is to say that this restaurant is legendary among sommeliers and chefs alike throughout the region. Bern’s has been voted the “best steakhouse in the country” by Wine Spectator and “best restaurant in America” by Rachel Ray.
You wouldn’t know from looking at it from the outside but Bern’s Steakhouse has 8 dining rooms and seats 350 people downstairs and 250 people upstairs and requires a staff of about 300 people. What’s even more amazing is they are always booked even with one of the largest seating capacities of any fine dining restaurant in Florida.
Because of Bern’s amazing wine list, they have been awarded Wine Spectator’s Grand Award. Bern’s probably has the best wine list (182 pages) in the country including over 200 wines by the glass and over 6,800 wines by the bottle. It is said that the owner of Bern’s Steak House, David Laxer has the largest private wine collection in the world.
Bern’s Steakhouse features steaks that are aged 5 to 8 weeks and broiled over charcoal. Their steaks really aren’t as expensive as you’d think and include a side and a salad. After dinner, don’t pass up a visit to the Harry Waugh Dessert Room. A well advanced reservation for Bern’s Steak House is a must and figure on spending at least $100 a person for the full experience.
If you just want to check the place out, get there early and grab a seat in the bar. You can get a chicken or steak sandwich for $12 to $15 plus the cost for a glass of wine and that includes the tour.
