Tampa Airports – Flights & Ground Transportation

Freeway sign indicating I275 South Tampa Airport St Petersburg or I4 East to OrlandoThere are two major airports serving downtown Tampa: Tampa International Airport (TPA) and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (Pie).  I recommend Tampa International (TPA) if you’re staying in downtown Tampa and considering a Tampa Bay Lightning or Buccaneers game. St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE) is a good option if you’re traveling beyond Tampa with a rental car and/or you’re flying in from one of the smaller markets served by Allegiant Airlines.

Tampa International Airport (TPA)

Tampa International Airport (TPA) is 8 miles northwest of Downtown Tampa and right near Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So if you ever considered flying in for just a day or two for an NFL football game, TPA airport is very convenient.

Tampa Airport provides service for less expensive carriers such as Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines, and Jet Blue along with major carriers such as United Airlines, Delta Airlines, and Southwest Airlines.

Tampa International Airport (TPA) is affordably accessible to downtown Tampa via SuperShuttle, ExecuCar, Tampa Yellow Cab, or public transportation.

Yellow Cab from TPA to Downtown Tampa

A taxi from Tampa International Airport (TPA) to downtown Tampa is probably the best value if you’re traveling with others. A $25 flat fee will get you anywhere downtown from the airport.

Yellow Cab also comes in handy once you’re downtown.  Check out their Fare Estimator online but generally speaking, cost is $2.50 for the first 1/8 mile and $2.50 for each mile after that.  I’ve seen the taxis running around but you should probably call ahead unless you notice a taxi stand near Channelside, Ybor City, or in front of your hotel.

Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) is the cheapest best way to get to Downtown Tampa from Tampa International Airport (TPA).
